Background:
Born on 10 March 1992, this 18 year old sportsman from the North West has one of the most remarkable rehabilitation stories - a real inspiration to other amputees.

Social Responsibility

Derik lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident in February 2008. Four days after amputation he was admitted to the Muelmed Rehabilitation Hospital in Pretoria and, through following the Icexpress Post-op Program, Derek was able to walk on day 13.
Only 34 days after his amputation Derik was discharged from Muelmed Hospital and able to walk, as well as run, without crutches. Shortly after, he joined his schoolmates on a rugby tour to Argentina. Derik is in Matric at Potchefstroom Gimnasium.

Recent Results:
Derik’s personal best distances are as follows:
F42 Discus – 28.95 meters
F42 Javelin – 36.01 meters (at the 2010 Nedbank National Championships)
F42 Shot Put – 10.64 meters (at the 2010 Nedbank National Championships)

Derik took the Silver in all three his Field event at the 2010 Nedbank National Championships and threw a World Qualifying B distance in the Javelin event.

He has also been nominated for the Potchefstroom Sportsman of the Year Award.

Personal Aspirations:
“Apart from my goal to qualify for the World Championships at the 2010 SA Championships, I am also focused on passing Matric.
