The i-LIMB Hand (Touch Bionics)

The i-Limb is the first bionic prosthetic hand with five individual operating fingers.

The i-Limb is not only lightweight, but it works and looks like a human hand. The i-Limb is controlled by a specific control system that picks up electric signals in the muscles of the remaining portion of the amputated limb, to operate the fingers of the bionic hand.

Even after amputation, patients still have a sensation that the hand is still there. To generate a strong signal, patients are asked to move the missing hand.

With time these reflexes become intuitive, allowing patients to move the i-limb without effort.

The bionic thumb of the i-Limb, just like a human hand, can rotate, making many different grips possible. Closing the thumb on the side of the index finger, a patient can grip a plate or even turn a key in a lock. Rotating the thumb, opening and closing the other fingers the i-Limb can allow patient to carry shopping bags, hold a cold drink can or pick up small items. A pointed index finger makes typing on a computer, telephone or ATM machine possible.

International Expertise and Experience

What makes the i-Limb remarkable is the build in sensors in each finger. The sensors signal the hand to stop powering the hand when it has sufficient grip on a object. The fingers then stay locked into position till the patient whishes to open the fingers again. In a resting position, the i-limb fingers are slightly bent.

The hand looks anatomically more correct, making the bionic hand less noticeable to other people.

The advance design of the i-Limb makes it possible to unscrew each finger of the hand individually. So a malfunctioning unit can easily be replaced, never leaving the patient without a hand for weeks

The I-Limb hand Cosmesis.

A special flexible skin cover that looks and moves like a human hand was designed for the i-Limb.

The cover wraps naturally over every contour of the bionic hand making it look natural and more life-like.

The cosmesis not only protects the i-limb from water and dust, but also provide a grip surface when holding or picking up objects increasing its functionality
