Icexpress three continue medals-streak in Stadskanaal
The annual IWAS Open Athletics Championships that took place from 2-6 June in The Netherlands, provided three South African participants (associated with local company Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics) with another opportunity to measure themselves on the international stage. The "Team Icexpress" group - consisting of Arnu Fourie, David Roos and Jean Joubert- added four Gold, one Silver, and two Bronze medals to their tally making for a fruitful European season indeed considering the athletes' combined results so far.
Roos won the T46 100m sprint final with a time of 11, 53 seconds, took Gold in the F46 Long jump with his final attempt, and won the Silver medal in the F46 Triple jump final while setting a new Africa Record of 12, 15 meters. David Bravo Torres from Spain snatched Gold in the Triple Jump with a distance of 12, 21 meters - a mere 0, 6 better than the South African.
Filed athlete, Joubert, came in fifth in the F44 Shot put final but walked away with Bronze medals in both the F44 Discus- and F44 Javelin finals. Having set a new SA record of 41.55 meters in the Javelin event at the Dutch Open at the end of May, Joubert proceeded to set even a better record at the IWAS Open with a new personal best of 44, 14 meters.
Arnu Fourie continued to dominate in the T44 sprint events. He took Gold in the 100m with a time of 11.43 seconds with Marcus Rehm from Germany in second place with a time of 12, 05. Fourie also won the T44 200m race with a time of 23.20 seconds. Italy's Roberto La Barbera came in second with a time of 24, 76 seconds and Germany's Rehm third with a time of 24, 81.
The European series now moves to Germany where the athletes will compete in another two international meets. Team Icexpress Manager; Johan Snyders, will join the team for this final German leg of the competition due to start in Leverkusen on 9 June.
