Manufacturing Process

Worldwide there are different companies manufacturing prosthetic componentry. They all differ in quality and price. Icexpress is proud to use the products and components produced by the company Ossur.

Prosthesis is a replacement limb made up from a number of different parts. The parts will vary according to the different needs of patients. The products Ossur use is all of high quality, making amputees feel comfortable and perform optical.

The first part of a prosthetic leg for an above knee amputee is the silicon liner followed by the socket, knee and foot.

• Silicon liner: the liner is the fist component of the prosthetic leg, which is rolled onto the residual limb. It is made of a soft stretchy material that protects the limb and attaches through a prosthetic lock to the socket.

• The socket: Once the liner is on it, the residual limb then slides into a hard socket. The socket is specifically made to fit you individually and consists of a variety of materials.

• Knee: If you are an above knee amputee, the socket has a prosthetic knee joint connected to it. The better the design the more fluid and natural the movement of the knee will be.

• Foot: Below either the socket or the knee is a tube to which the foot is connected. The design of the foot is critical to energy expenditure and comfort when walking.

A Prosthesis for a below knee amputee will be the same except will not include a knee.

The manufacturing of a socket and assemble of the different parts to produce a prosthetic leg normally takes a few days. Sometimes it can even take a few weeks from the time the patient came in to be measured to the actual fitting of the prosthesis.

The longer the time laps between measuring and fitting, the less likely it will be that the prosthesis will fit properly.

At Icexpress we use new technology allowing us to cut the time frame of manufacturing a leg to a half hour for below knee amputees and an hour for above knee amputees. This technique guarantees a good fitting prosthesis every time.
